Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

84 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a state ment on the circumstances of the discovery by gardaí of a consignment of explosives and bombs in County Tipperary on 23 January 2000. [2516/00]

On 23 January 2000 gardaí stopped a van at a checkpoint at Townspark, Cahir, County Tipperary. A search of the van led to the discovery of an assortment of home-made weaponry.

One man, a native of Limerick, was arrested at the scene and was charged before the Special Criminal Court on 25 January with the unlawful possession of explosives. He was remanded in custody with consent to bail.

As the matter is before the courts at present I would not consider any further comment appropriate at this stage.
