Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

363 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress, if any, in the commencement of work at St. Mary's Church, Gowran, County Kilkenny; and the start date and timeframe for completion. [3276/00]

My Department commenced work at St. Mary's Church, Gowran in 1994. Since that time the church has been re-roofed and conservation works have been carried out. At present conservation of the tombs, which will be permanently housed and displayed in the church, is in progress. The church is being re-wired and underfloor heating is being installed, the interior of the modern church will be re-plastered and the blocked arch between the tower and the nave of the 13th century church will be opened up. Works have also commenced on the tower of the church and guide facilities have been provided.

It is expected that the church will open to the public this summer.

Ceist:

364 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the funding, if any, available to local authorities or organisations wishing to restore the walls of a medieval city such as Kilkenny; if Dúchas will undertake this project; if funding is provided for the sign posting of these heritage sites; the assistance, if any, available; and the role Dúchas can play. [3277/00]

My Department has no funds available to either assist local authorities or organisations to restore and signpost medieval town walls or to consider undertaking such work directly. The Heritage Council which is a grant-giving body for heritage-related projects may be able to assist.

While the town or city walls are the responsibility of local authorities, the heritage service of my Department offers advice on the repair and maintenance of such walls as well as guidance in relation to the impacts of planning and development on these structures.
