Vol. 514 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Retirement Scheme.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

111 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Defence if he has received the report of the review group dealing with pensions; if he has made submissions in relation to payment of the military service allowance for those who retired before the specified date; if he will make the payment in view of the small number of people involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4417/00]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the Commission on Public Service Pensions and the issue of having military service allowance included in the calculation of pensions of Defence Forces' personnel who retired before 1 August 1990.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 213 on 26 January 2000 on this matter. The commission is expected to make its final report in the near future and this will require detailed and careful consideration. The position of pre-August 1990 Defence Forces pensioners will be further considered in the light of that report and of any relevant Government decisions thereon.
