Vol. 514 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Property.

Martin Brady

Ceist:

113 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Defence when he will dispose of Clancy Barracks, Dublin 8; the arrangements, if any, in place to redeploy personnel from this barracks; and the meeting, if any, which took place with these personnel. [4419/00]

I expect Clancy Barracks to be vacated this year and arrangements will be made for its disposal following its evacuation.

At present, a board consisting of officers of the Defence Forces and departmental personnel is examining all matters arising from the proposed closure of Clancy Barracks. Among the issues to be reported on by the board is the future location of personnel and facilities. The functions of the Ordnance Corps located at Clancy Barracks will be transferred to the Curragh and the planning and design of the new facilities in this regard is at an advanced stage. Provision has also been made in the estimates for the year 2000 for the relocation of corps of engineer personnel to McKee Barracks.

There are 105 civilian personnel in Clancy Barracks and officials from my Department have recently met with the closure committee in the barracks and presented a menu of options for consideration by civilian staff. These options include transfer to the Curragh, redeployment to other military barracks, redeployment to other departments which have vacancies for State industrial employees and I have recently obtained sanction from the Minister for Finance to offer the civilian employees at Clancy Barracks an enhanced redundancy package. The civilian staff have undertaken, through their closure committee, to respond to the offer in due course at which point the matter will be processed further.
