Ceist:181 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide additional taxi ranks in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter [4779/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that section 84, as amended by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968), of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, (No. 24 of 1961) authorises the commissioner, with the consent of the Minister for the Environment and Local Government and after consultation with the local authority concerned to make by-laws in relation to stands for street service vehicles in respect of any specified area.
I understand that a review of the taxi ranks in the Dublin taxi meter area is being carried out at present by the carriage office in consultation with the four local authorities and other interested parties.
I wish to assure the Deputy that if additional taxi stands are considered necessary the Dublin appointed stands by-laws will be amended to provide for same.
