Vol. 514 No. 5

Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

183 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the provisional crime statistics in each Garda division area for 1999. [4727/00]

I can inform the Deputy that while provisional Garda crime statistics for 1999 have not yet been formally published on a divisional basis by the Garda authorities, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the national figure is approximately 81,500 indictable offences.

As the Deputy may be aware from my recent statement I am greatly heartened by the provisional Garda crime statistics which indicate that there has been a decrease of 5% in the overall crime levels in 1999 when compared to 1998. This means that crime has fallen for the third successive year since I came into office. This is tangible evidence that the Government's anti-crime policies are working well.
