Vol. 515 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Safety.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

93 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will meet a delegation representing the Irish Locomotive Drivers Association to discuss various aspects of its concerns relating to rail safety. [5561/00]

The Irish Locomotive Drivers Association wrote to me on 10 February last outlining its concerns in relation to rail safety. These concerns relate in the main to perceived deficiencies in existing legislation on the regulation of rail safety.

The new rail safety framework, which I outlined in December last, will involve the establishment of a statutory independent railway safety inspectorate to oversee and monitor railway safety in Ireland. In developing the new framework, my officials are available to meet all interested parties to listen to their views on, and suggestions for, the new framework.

The Irish Locomotive Drivers Association also wrote to me on 16 February outlining its concerns on the new rostering arrangements for train drivers. This is an operational matter for Iarnród Éireann and not one in which I have any function.
