Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traffic Wardens.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

226 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals, if any, he has to amend legislation to give traffic wardens employed by local authorities protection over and above that given to ordinary citizens due to the hazardous nature of their employment which frequently leads to them being abused, threatened, intimidated and, on occasions, assaulted, and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6052/00]

The Local Authorities (Traffic Wardens) Act, 1975, provides that any person who obstructs a traffic warden employed by a local authority acting in the course of his or her duty shall be guilty of an offence. Enforcement of this provision is a matter for the Garda Commissioner.

The issue of assault on traffic wardens is also a matter for the Garda Commissioner and, in that context, I refer the Deputy to the reply given by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to Question No. 69 of 23 November 1999.
