Vol. 515 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Ceist:

285 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action, if any, which will be taken on the high number of car crimes reported in the Cypress Grove area of Templeogue, Dublin 6W; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5842/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that local Garda management is aware of the concerns of the Cypress Grove residents and that a member of the district community policing unit liaises with the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and the resident's association. I understand that the area is patrolled by members of the crime prevention unit which operates from Terenure Garda station. Uniform and detective mobile units also patrol the area in order to prevent and detect car crime. I am assured by the Garda authorities that the Cypress Grove area will continue to receive appropriate attention.

Ceist:

286 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request car manufacturers to make the latest anti-theft technology standard in all cars. [5843/00]

Ceist:

287 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will carry out a public information campaign on the steps car owners can take to prevent crime involving cars. [5844/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 286 and 287 together.

With regard to anti-theft security in cars, the national crime prevention office and the stolen vehicle recovery unit, both based at Garda headquarters, Harcourt Square, maintain regular contact with motor distributors and retailers. I understand that, in accordance with recent EU legislation, all new vehicles sold in Ireland are fitted with an immobiliser as standard. I am also informed that there is a wide range of anti-theft devices on the market. The quality of the device is, like anything else, reflected in the price and ultimately it is the responsibility of the car owner to take appropriate steps to safeguard property.

The Garda and in particular the stolen motor vehicle investigation unit and the crime prevention unit take every opportunity to dispense advice on car security at exhibitions, seminars, presentations etc. and are always available to give specific advice on request.
