Vol. 515 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

209 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will review the driving licence regulations in order that an endorsement automatically takes effect from the time it is made in the court rather than from the time the licence is produced to the local authority in view of the fact that many drivers are unaware that they must actually hand in the licence to get the endorsement stamped on it; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6655/00]

Sections 36 and 37 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, which have been more recently reviewed by section 49(1)(e) of the Road Traffic Act, 1994, provide that particulars of convictions for certain offences must be endorsed on a driving licence. Endorsements can only be carried on a current valid licence. The provisions of sections 36 and 37 will fall for further review in the context of the proposed introduction of a penalty points system.
