Vol. 516 No. 1

Written Answers. - Death Certificates.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

72 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health and Children if the necessary arrangements for the issuing of a death certificate for a person (details supplied) in relation to a road traffic accident in 1999 in County Wexford will be expedited in order that his widow can obtain the certificate to put her financial affairs in order; and if he will personally intervene to expedite this in view of the long delay involved. [7070/00]

The administration of the registration system is a matter for An tArd-Chláraitheoir, the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and for local registrars who operate under his general direction.

I have had inquiries made with An tArd-Chláraitheoir and he has informed me that the death adverted to by the Deputy was referred to the coroner. It will be a matter for the coroner to decide whether an inquest should be held in this particular instance and the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages must await the coroner's decision before registering the death.
