Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cycling Promotion.

Ceist:

193 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance the steps, if any, his Department has taken to encourage members of staff to cycle to work; and if he will consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. [8630/00]

All the Department's buildings have parking facilities for bicycles and most have shower facilities which can be availed of by cyclists.

I have no proposals to consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. In any event, as a general principle travelling expenses are not paid to staff for any portion of their journey to and from work irrespective of the mode of transport used.
