107 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of cases of BSE in each county since the first confirmed case of the disease in 1989; the progress, if any, to eradicate the disease; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9375/00]

The statistical information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following table.

My Department is operating a comprehensive range of measures, which have been reviewed on numerous occasions by the EU Commission's Food and Veterinary Office, for the eradication and control of BSE and will continue to treat this as a top priority, given its importance in terms of public health and consumer confidence in our beef industry at home and abroad.

NOTE

a)In 1996 a total of 3,230 brains from cattle in depopulated herds and cohort animals were examined.

One additional positive cohort animal was detected.

b)In 1997 a total of 5,043 brains from cattle in depopulated herds and cohort animals were examined.

Three additional positive cohort animals were detected.

c)In 1998 a total of 2,557 brains from cattle in depopulated herds and cohort animals have been examined. Four positive cohort animals have been detected.

d)In 1999 a total of 3,260 brains from cattle in depopulated herds and cohort animals have been examined. Four additional positive cohort animals have been detected.

e)In 2000 (to date) a total of 56 brains from cattle in depopulated herds and cohort animals have been examined. No additional positive cohort animals have been detected.
