Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

149 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if the site for each particular injection for tuberculosis testing is designated in regulations; his views on whether it is acceptable for a veterinary inspector to alternate the sites; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9965/00]

The sites for the injection of avian and bovine tuberculin are set out in EU Directive 64/432, as amended, and the testing instructions that issue to all veterinary practitioners each year comply with this directive in regard to testing sites.

As part of the quality control of the TB eradication programme, each practitioner is supervised at least once each year and the location of the site of injection is one of the items checked at this visit. This is to ensure that the testing practitioner is correctly locating the site of injection.

There is no designation in national law as to which site should be used for avian and bovine tuberculin and consequently a veterinary inspector of my Department may decide, on occasion, to alternate the injection sites.
