Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

164 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Finance the position on the expenditure of £2.5 million to relieve flooding in south Galway; if further plans have to be drawn up for the areas involved; the progress, if any, in each area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9970/00]

The steering group established to bring forward proposals for the expenditure of the £2.5 million provided for special works for alleviating the effects of flooding in the south Galway area. The group, which comprises representatives from the Irish Farmers Association, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association, Dúchas – the heritage service, Galway County Council and the Office of Public Works, has identified schemes for the Mannin Cross and Cregclare areas for immediate investigation and development of plans, with a view to bringing schemes to statutory public exhibition stage later this year. Flood relief scheme proposals for the Kilchreest Termon and Kiltiernan – Ballinderreen areas will require further surveys-investigations in the coming months before they could be progressed to this stage. The feasibility of carrying out other works at the Boleyneendoorish channel and a number of road culvert sites recommended in the major south Galway flood study report are also being investigated.
