Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Presidency.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

85 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if the incoming Swedish Presidency of the EU has indicated to her if the banning of advertising targeted at children below the age of 12 throughout the EU will be a priority of its presidency; her position in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10919/00]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 1 of 2 March 2000. Sweden's Presidency of the EU Council of Mini sters will commence in January 2001. While the issue of advertising targeted at children has not so far been specifically mentioned as a priority, indications at this stage are that consumer interests in general are likely to be a key issue for the Swedish Presidency. Also, co-operation in the culture and media field – with special reference to the situation of children and young people on the new media scene has been signalled as an issue that will be given particular attention. However, until I see definite proposals, I cannot be categoric as to my position on them.
