Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Family and Community Services.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

221 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the progress, if any, in relation to a submission made to his Department by Bishop Birch Place Community Development Group, County Kilkenny, requesting the employment of a community worker in view of its three year work plan. [11543/00]

My Department operates the family and community services resource centre programme under which neighbourhood centres working to address disadvantage and to provide family support in their community may receive funding. The aim of these centres is essentially to help combat disadvantage by improving the functioning of the family unit. Centres can provide special services for lone parent families, young mothers and others considered in need of extra support and can act as a first step to community participation and social inclusion for the most vulnerable and marginalised families.

I can confirm that my Department recently received an application for funding under the programme from the group concerned. As a large number of applications have been received and will take time to process, it is not possible to indi cate at this stage if funding can be allocated to the group under this programme. However, my Department will be in touch with the group in due course regarding its application.
