Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Recognition.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

263 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will co-ordinate measures to provide a second level lán gaeltacht secondary school in the northside of Dublin in response to the seven year campaign of Coiste Meánscoile Oir-Thuaiscirt Bhaile Átha Cliath; and his views on the commitment given by his Department for 1 September 2000 to this committee. [12010/00]

My Department is satisfied as to the need for an all-Irish postprimary educational facility in the northeast of Dublin and has been actively pursuing the matter for some time. In May 1999, a proposal was made to the coiste which would have enabled such a facility to commence operation in a local postprimary school in September last. That proposal was not acceptable to the coiste and, in the interim, the Department has been actively examining other possible solutions that would involve the use of surplus postprimary school accommodation in the general area.
