Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers' Scheme.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

478 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received the report from the working group examining the operation of the scheme for relief of tax and excise duties under the disabled drivers and disabled passengers tax concession regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12613/00]

The deliberations of the interdepartmental group of officials engaged in a review of the scheme of reliefs from vehicle registration tax and value added tax on vehicles and from excise duty on fuel used by severely and permanently physically disabled persons as drivers and passengers is continuing. As the Deputy is aware, this scheme is operated on a day to day basis by the Revenue Commissioners.

Over a three day period during week ended 5 May 2000, the group met with representatives of a number of organisations and with a number of persons who had indicated a desire to make oral submissions to the group. Also, the group is advertising in the national newspapers on Thursday 11 May 2000, seeking written submissions from members of the public concerning the scheme. Submissions, from whatever source, will be welcomed by the group. Information furnished at these meetings and by way of submission by the public will facilitate the group in bringing its work to a conclusion and in finalising its report for consideration by the Department of Finance.
