Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Seaweed Forum.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

85 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 129 of 2 November 1999, the National Seaweed Forum reported to him in April 2000. [12903/00]

The National Seaweed Forum was established to identify how the seaweed sector can be developed to maximise its contribution to the national and local economies and to the income of people in coastal communities. The forum began work in November 1999.

At the forum's request, the deadline for the presentation of its report has been extended to July. The forum has met on six occasions since its inaugural meeting in November 1999 and is currently working on the finalisation of the report.

I met the members of the forum in March and was encouraged by their enthusiasm and determination to produce a comprehensive report on the seaweed industry and the challenges and opportunities which it faces.
