Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Marine Pollution.

Derek McDowell

Ceist:

100 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will make a statement on the findings of the recent Coastwatch Ireland survey on the extent of coastline and harbour pollution; and the steps being taken to deal with the problem of marine pollution identified in the report. [12927/00]

The findings of the survey, which I understand was conducted throughout the island of Ireland in autumn 1999 as part of a survey undertaken throughout Europe, brought mixed results.

While the position regarding oil pollution is good, our large waste and domestically produced litter load is high.

Funding in respect of the survey was provided through the Ireland-Wales INTERREG programme as part of the clean seas project which has been undertaken in conjunction with a similar project in Wales.

I am pleased to note the commitment given in the report to proceed with the clean seas project. My Department is represented on the liaison committee and I have asked my officials to con tinue to work with Coastwatch Ireland and other interested parties, including Government Departments and agencies, both here and in Wales, with a view to achieving the desired improvements.
