Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

120 Mr. Penrose asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the procedures and avenues available to a person who, in 1956, was awarded compensation for injuries sustained during the course of his employment pursuant to the provisions of the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1934, to have this amount of compensation increased as it was awarded then at the rate of £9 per fortnight, as it was based on the earnings of a county council worker at that time, and as this amounts to a pittance at current day levels; if a review procedure to have this amount increased to a modern day level of compensation is available given that the provisions of the Act no longer apply; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12406/00]

The matter about which the Deputy asks is a complicated one. On the basis of the information available, I am not in a position to offer a definitive reply. However, if Deputy Penrose supplies me with details of this particular case, I shall liaise with my colleague, the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs to see what, if any, options are open to the man on whose behalf Deputy Penrose has tabled this question.
