313 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the creation of a full-time caretaking position in Ballaghaderreen vocational school, County Roscommon in view of the fact that there is a caretaker currently employed on a part-time basis for over 30 hours per week and the dramatic increase in numbers will easily suffice for the appointment of this caretaker on a full-time basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have had the matter examined again and the position is that the question of an increase in the maintenance hours for Ballaghaderreen vocational school is a matter for County Roscommon VEC to address within its existing approved allocation.
The Deputy will appreciate that each vocational education committee receives a maintenance staffing allocation from my Department to be deployed in the best manner possible to meet the needs of the committee's schools and other needs. In this regard the maintenance resources approved for County Roscommon VEC compare favourably with other vocational education committees with similar sized second level programmes. It is a matter accordingly for the VEC to deploy available resources in accordance with its own needs and priorities.
