Ceist:

335 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he can give figures for the number of arrests and subsequent prosecutions made by the Garda under section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, giving annualised figures since the Act came into force. [14865/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 334 and 335 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that figures for the number of arrests made under sections 4 and 6 of the Public Order Act are not readily available and could only be obtained by a disproportionate expenditure of Garda time and resources.

However, statistics for the number of prosecutions taken under sections 4 and 6 of the Act are published in the annual reports of the Garda Síochána, the most recent of which covers the year 1998. The available figures are set out in the following table. I understand that statistics were not gathered for section 4 in 1995.
