Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

339 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 294 of 16 May 2000, the contact made locally in Carlow or Laois by the Department to establish the cause or reasons for the incidents of vandalism at Killeshin graveyard; the security measures which can be put in place immediately to deal with the matter; and the long-term plans the local gardaí have to deal with the problems of vandalism. [14887/00]

As I stated in my reply to Question No. 294 of 16 May 2000, a Garda investigation is under way with a view to apprehending those responsible for acts of vandalism in the Killeshin churchyard. As the Deputy will appreciate, the investigation of criminal complaints is a operational matter for the Garda Síochána.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that additional attention is indeed being given to the church since these incidents. Garda patrols, both uniform and plain clothes, have been, and will continue to be increased in the area of Graiguecullen and in particular the church and grounds.

With regard to local contacts, I am informed that local gardaí have made contact with the residents' associations of the estates which surround the church. I understand that a meeting of all residents has been called at which the Garda will address them on the problem.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that local gardaí have discussed the problem and the precautionary measures to be taken with the local rector on a number of occasions.
