Vol. 520 No. 2

Written Answers. - Services for the Elderly.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

107 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals if any, he has to introduce a scheme which will allow older people over 75 years to have smoke alarms provided free of charge; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15508/00]

I have been having preliminary discussions with ministerial colleagues on the possibility of having long-life smoke alarms installed in the homes of older people living alone. The proposal is at an exploratory stage and, among the ideas being considered is the possibility of introducing a pilot project to commence this year, with further installations to take place in 2001. No further details are currently available.
