Written Answers. - Voluntary Age Card Scheme.
I assume the Deputy is referring to the national voluntary age card scheme, which came into operation in April of last year following the making of regulations by me, as Minister, under the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988. This is a voluntary scheme for persons who have already attained 18 years of age and who are, therefore, legally entitled to purchase or consume alcohol on a licensed premises. Its purpose is to provide evidence of age where a doubt exists. In this way, the voluntary scheme is designed to assist both consumers and licensees. As the details already contained on the age card provide sufficient evidence of age, the inclusion of a person's RSI number would be of no additional benefit.
In the circumstances, it is not my intention to amend the age cards issued under the national voluntary age card scheme to include a person's RSI number.
