Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

132 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of nursing vacancies in St Ita's Hospital, Portrane, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9, the Mater Hospital, Dublin 7, and Temple Street Children's' Hospital; the way in which it is proposed to fill these vacancies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16286/00]

The position, as advised by the Eastern Regional Health Authority – ERHA – is as follows:

St. Ita's Hospital, Portrane: There are currently 47 nursing vacancies at the hospital. The ERHA assures me that every effort is being made to fill these vacancies by way of advertising in national and local newspapers, periodicals and via recruitment campaigns in the United Kingdom.

Beaumont Hospital: There are currently vacancies for 96 nurses – wholetime equivalents. The hospital's most recent initiatives to attract nurses included large stand-alone advertisements in national and international papers and nursing magazines highlighting what the organisation can offer, participation in the recent national recruitment skills fair in the RDS and interviewing foreign nurses. The hospital continues its advertising programme in Northern Ireland, England and Canada as well as its in-house recruitment and retention initiatives.

Mater Hospital: There are currently 119 nursing vacancies. I am assured that the hospital is making every effort to retain current staff and attract more nurses to the hospital. It is antici pated that approximately 70 nurses from the Philippines will be employed in the near future. However, it will be necessary for them to attend a six week orientation course prior to commencing employment. Some 25 are planning to start the course this week.
Temple Street Hospital: There are currently five nursing vacancies. These vacancies will be filled using the hospital's normal recruitment process.
