Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Juvenile Offenders.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

169 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of people who have absconded from either Trinity House or Oberstown Unit in Lusk County Dublin in the last 12 months; if the young people who have absconded were re-apprehended; the number remaining at large; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16232/00]

There were no absconding incidents from Trinity House School during the last 12 months. In the case of Oberstown boys centre a total, of 22 abscondings took place from the centre and one abscond took place from Oberstown girls centre. All of the young people involved in these incidents were re-apprehended.

Consultants engaged by my Department are preparing the necessary technical documentation to allow tenders to be invited shortly for the provision of a secure fence to encompass the special schools complex at Lusk.

The planning of this project was delayed to allow for some changes to the details of the proposed fence resulting from the range of related developments on the campus.
