Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Centre for Deaf Studies.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

20 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received the report of the Higher Education Authority on the proposal to establish a centre for deaf studies; the stage the proposal is at; if there has been any costings put on such a proposal; if it has been given financial sanction by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16112/00]

Following its consultation with various interests in the field, the higher education authority has recently submitted a report to my Department on the proposal to establish a centre for deaf studies in Trinity College, Dublin. The authority concludes that there is a strong case for the establishment of the centre. I am favourably disposed to such a centre. However, a number of practical issues need further clarification and I have asked my officials to liaise with the authority in this regard.
