Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

82 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to encourage third level physics and chemistry graduates into the teaching profession; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16194/00]

I am aware of the importance of improving our performance in physics and chemistry. My Department is actively investigating the possibility of establishing a task force to address the various issues pertaining to the declining interest in the physical sciences at both second and third level. Within this context, issues relating to the supply of a sufficient cohort of well-trained teachers of physics and chemistry will arise.

The higher diploma in education is the main route of entry into the second level teaching profession in Ireland. In recent years, the quota for entry into the higher diploma in education has been raised. My Department is monitoring the overall supply and demand situation, and also any shortages which may arise in particular subject areas.
