Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

23 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when the integrated ticketing system promised by her for introduction this year will be operational. [16397/00]

The Committee on Integrated Ticketing is finalising its report and I expect to receive it by the end of July. The main outstanding item, which is being urgently addressed, relates to the financial implications of implementing an integrated fares and ticketing system.

The lead in-time for the project will obviously be dependent on the recommended type of system and approval for funding. Pending the finalisation of the report, I am not in a position to comment on the implementation schedule.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

24 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if, in regard to the commitment given in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, she will outline when the promised pilot programme will be established, building on the ADM rural transport initiative; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15920/00]

The commitment given in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, concerning public transport initiatives in rural areas, is supported by the inclusion of a £3.5 million provision in the national development plan. This provision is for capital support for the development of pilot public transport initiatives in rural areas. The aim will be to encourage local or community-based initiatives to provide bus services in such areas.

My Department is currently considering the appropriate procedures for the award of these grants. It is hoped to have the procedures in place by the end of the year.

It is intended that these pilot projects, coupled with the work of ADM and other bodies and the input of the Public Transport Partnership Forum, will provide the basis for the development of a rural public transport policy.
