Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Vaccination Programme.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

136 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of adverse reactions recorded by each health board to the Trivax DPT 3 in 1 vaccine in each of the years from 1972 to 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18599/00]

I have made inquiries of the health boards in this matter. They have indicated that, in general, adverse reactions to vaccinations are notified by doctors to the Irish Medicines Board, formerly the National Drugs Advisory Board, which maintains a database in this regard, and not to their local health board.

A complete examination of all individual immunisation records held by the health boards would be necessary to establish definitively whether these contain any information on this issue. This would represent a disproportionate demand on the limited time of staff in the health boards.

Where individual health boards have identified records in relation to suspected adverse reactions the position is as set out as follows.

The Eastern Regional Health Authority has stated that the information which is readily available indicates that, in the former Eastern Health Board area, the following suspected adverse reactions were notified in the period concerned:

1972/73

73 cases, of which four were classified as seriousadverse reactions

1995

12 cases

1996

3 cases

I refer the Deputy to my predecessor's reply to Parliamentary Question No. 151 of 25 May 1999 which contained some additional information in relation to this issue in the Eastern Health Board region.
The Mid-Western Health Board has indicated that the following suspected adverse reactions were recorded in respect of County Clare – records are not available in relation to the remainder of the board's area:
