Ceist:

180 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of people who have died from AIDS here during the year 2000; the way in which this compares to previous years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18779/00]

The most recent available figures for reported deaths from AIDS are for 1999. They show that 17 people died. Deaths from AIDS have been plateauing in the developed world because of the availability of highly active anti-retroviral treatment, which is administered to people who are HIV positive or who have AIDS. This treatment is delaying and even halting the onset of the acute symptoms of AIDS and is allowing people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives. The cumulative total reported deaths from AIDS since reporting began is 349 reported cases and the number of deaths each year are detailed as follows:
