Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

218 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if action can be taken by the Garda in relation to an ongoing problem of crime, vandalism and lawlessness in an estate (details supplied) in Dublin 5 by disruptive youths following the submission of a petition by the residents of the area to the local Garda station; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18692/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that local gardaí have identified a particular group of young males as the cause of ongoing problems. I understand that local gardaí have targeted this group, and since 1 January 2000, 40 arrests have been made, mostly under the Public Order Act. Initially, these youths were dealt with by way of the juvenile diversion scheme, but they are now being dealt with by way of charge.

I also understand that a file is currently with the DPP regarding a number of individuals in this group in relation to an assault committed in the estate.

I have also been informed that extra patrols have been put in place in the estate and that a beat is also performed in St. Anne's Estate from 7 p.m. to midnight.
