Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

245 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if, with regard to the case of a person (details supplied) who has a BA degree from a northern university, living and teaching in Dublin in a private language college and who has been in correspondence and applied for recognition and registration through the teachers Registration Council but whose application has been rejected, he will outline the views of his Department and that of the Registration Council; the options open to this person to obtain registration; if the application can be assessed, having civics as her major subject; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18733/00]

The Registration Council is a statutory body responsible for the recognition of qualifications for the purposes of teaching in voluntary secondary schools. The holders of qualifications, which do not have general recognition, must apply to the council, on an individual basis, for recognition of the particular qualifications held.

The person referred to by the Deputy applied to the council for recognition of the qualification held by her. The council, having considered the matter, decided that it could not approve the request for recognition and the applicant was advised of the decision in March last.

The applicant has sought information in relation to shortfalls in her qualifications and the council will be in communication with her in this regard in the near future.
