Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legal Actions.

Ceist:

301 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of legal actions entered into by the Department within the past 12 months; the number that are either successful, failed or ongoing; the total cost of these actions; the number of barristers employed; and the amount of money given to each barrister. [19082/00]

The initiation of legal actions by me as Minister for Education and Science is an uncommon event and where it does arise it is more likely in the context of an appeal against a decision where the Minister for Education and Science was initially cited as the defendant. The overwhelming majority of cases involving my Department are cases initiated by other people. It is not possible to compile the actual information requested by the Deputy within the time available. However, my Department will provide as much information as is practical to the Deputy as soon as possible.
