Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

1080 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position with regard to the levels of radon gas at a school (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20528/00]

The level of radon gas recorded by the RPII at the school to which the Deputy refers at 212 bcqM3 was marginally in excess of the reference level of 200bcqM3 set by the RPII for schools.

Remediation programmes have been carried out in a number of the worst affected schools.

Consultants from the Buildings Research Establishment in London have been engaged to advise on the appropriate remediation measures in schools with radon levels between 200bcqM3 and 400bcqM3. The consultants are currently implementing remediation measures on a trial basis in approximately ten schools. The trial results are likely to inform the overall strategy to be adapted for the remediation programmes for schools with radon levels between 200bcqM3 and 400bcqM3. The trial results are expected to be available next month.
