Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

119 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the widespread concern about the highly centralised nature of his Department; his views on the obstacles which this puts in the way of providing an adequate response to local education needs; the plans he has to establish local structures similar to those in the Departments of Health and Children, Social, Community and Family Affairs and others; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21468/00]

I am aware of concerns with regard to the centralised nature of the Department. Earlier this year in recognition of these and other concerns relating to the delivery of service in the Department, I appointed a former secretary of the Department of Finance, Mr. Sean Cromien, to conduct a detailed review of the Department. Mr. Cromien led a task force which has been involved in intensive consultations over recent months. The report of the task force which is expected shortly will include its findings with regard to the centralisation issue.
