Ceist:

138 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education and Science the numbers recently appointed to inspectorate level either in primary or second levels; the teaching experience in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21414/00]

Some 11 new primary district inspectors and seven new post-primary inspectors were recruited to my Department's inspectorate on 4 September 2000.

Under the regulations, candidates for the primary district inspector competition were required to have at least three years' satisfactory service as a teacher. Candidates for the post-primary inspector competition were required to have at least three years relevant post-graduate experience. For this purpose relevant experience includes teaching, lecturing and may include further study, educational research, industrial-service-commercial employment or consultancy.

Six of the inspectors appointed on 4 September 2000 have between five and ten years of teaching experience, seven have between 11 and 20 years' experience and five have teaching experience of 21 years or more.
