Vol. 524 No. 1

Written Answers. - Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act.

Ceist:

65 Mr. Coveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the current status of the 16 cases of infringement of the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act, 1996, which was referred to the Chief State Solicitor's office in the past 12 months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21647/00]

In addition to the 16 cases of infringement of the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act, 1996, involving referral to the Chief State Solicitor's office for consideration in relation to legal action against offending employers in the 12 month period 1 October 1999 to 30 September 2000, one further such case has in the meantime been identified and referred to my legal advisers, bringing the total number of referrals to 17.

Court hearings, during the period 1 October 1999 to 7 October 2000, of prosecution actions under the Act numbered three, all of which resulted in the conviction of the employers involved. I am informed by the CSSO that dates have been set for hearing in a further nine of these 17 cases and that action in relation to the remainder is still being considered.

Question No. 66 taken with Question No. 55.
