Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Ceist:

54 Dr. Upton asked the Taoiseach the number of vacancies for each Civil Service grade in his Department; the additional steps he will take to attract and keep staff; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22601/00]

The number of vacancies in my Department for each Civil Service grade are as follows: one assistant secretary, two principal officers, two assistant principals, one higher executive officer, two administrative officers, four executive officers, one staff officer, 4.5 clerical officers. These posts are in the process of being filled in accordance with normal procedures and no undue delay is expected in this regard.

The Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission recently carried out a survey on retention levels in the Civil Service. Arising out of this survey, a report on marketing and retention in the Civil Service is under consideration by the SMI implementation group. This report highlights the areas in which efforts need to be concentrated on to recruit and retain staff. The SMI implementation group's recommendations on this report will feed back into the civil service wide human resources strategy process which is currently under way.
