Vol. 524 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

147 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if the qualifications of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 can be recognised for teaching purposes in view of the circumstances outlined. [22736/00]

The Registration Council is a statutory body responsible for the recognition of qualifications for the purposes of teaching in voluntary secondary schools. The holders of qualifications, which do not have general recognition, must apply to the council, on an individual basis, for recognition of the particular qualifications held.

The person referred to by the Deputy applied to the council for recognition of the degree qualification held by her. The council, having considered the matter, decided that this qualification did not meet its requirements for recognition. The applicant was advised of the decision in April last. Following further correspondence from the applicant, the council agreed that its requirements would be met in this case if and when the applicant successfully completes a specified course in the University of Dublin.

The person in question is currently teaching in a special school and is being remunerated at the untrained rate of pay. On her satisfying the requirements of the Registration Council, she may be become eligible for payment of incremental salary as a fully qualified secondary teacher.
