Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Milk Quota.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

233 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development further to Parliamentary Question No. 84 of 10 October 2000 in relation to milk quota appeals tribunal hardship cases in 2000/2001, when decisions will be made in this regard by the tribunal; if he will ensure that an application by a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath under this scheme is favourably considered in view of the fact that he was assured that he could purchase 35,000 gallons extra milk quota and expended considerable moneys to purchase the necessary stock to fill this quota; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23222/00]

The Deputy will be aware that the Milk Quota Appeals Tribunal is a body established to consider applications for additional quota from producers who have suffered extreme hardship as a result of the introduction of the milk quota system. The person in question has submitted an application for additional quota to the tribunal and his case will be considered as soon as possible.

Every application to the tribunal is treated in a fair and sympathetic manner but the amount of quota available for allocation is limited in the context of the large numbers of applications that are submitted.
The person named will be notified of the outcome of his application.
