Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

243 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to establish a waste management authority to oversee the adoption of county and regional waste management plans and for the disposal of hazardous waste; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23487/00]

I have no such proposals at this time.

Under Part II of the Waste Management Act, 1996, each local authority is required to make a waste management plan in respect of its functional area and to take such steps as are appropriate and necessary to attain the objectives of such a plan.

Facilities for the disposal of hazardous waste are subject to waste licensing or, in the case of incineration, to integrated pollution control licensing by the Environmental Protection Agency.
