Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Milk Products.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

145 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his views on the difficulties in the milk processing industry and manufacturing of milk products particularly where co-operatives are involved; and if he or the food section of Enterprise Ireland have any suggestions or plans to update the working of these enterprises to widen their field of activity and structure them on a more economically sound basis. [23378/00]

The Agri Food 2010 report highlighted the challenges that face the dairy processing sector over the medium to longer term. It also identified areas where further action is required including product development and marketing, greater focus on value added products and the development of international markets. The report pointed also to the need for further rationalisation of processing facilities.

In my response to that report a commitment has been given to have a comprehensive study undertaken to identify actions needed to enhance the economic viability of Ireland's dairy processing sector and to ensure that we are in a position to maintain and strengthen our international competitiveness. It is envisaged that the study will be done by an outside body for completion in the first half of next year.
