Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

158 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the implications the recently adopted EU directive on insurance intermediation will have on current legislation and the Insurance Bill, 1999; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23489/00]

There has been no EU directive recently adopted on insurance intermediation.

The EU Commission has recently concluded its deliberations on the subject of insurance intermediation and has submitted a proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on insurance mediation.

This document will initially be subject to consideration by member states through the format of a council working group.

At this stage I am not in any position to say when the directive is likely to be adopted. There are no substantive differences in approach between that set out in the draft directive and the Insurance Bill, 1999, currently nearing completion of its examination by the Dáil. The views of the members of the Oireachtas as expressed in the insurance Bill, when enacted, will be borne in mind during Council consideration of the draft directive.
