178 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development his views on growers markets and food produce markets; the encouragement and support that is available from his Department for the development of these markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23505/00]
Growers' markets and food produce markets provide a valuable outlet for the smaller producers of local produce, in particular fruit and vegetables. These markets also have an important secondary function in providing a social outlet for buyers and producers alike and in fostering a sense of local community. In recognition of this my Department provides a small annual grant to Country Markets Limited, a co-operative for small producers which has been in existence for over 50 years.
