Vol. 525 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fuel Prices.

Ceist:

61 Mr. Coveney asked the Minister for Finance the amount of the increase in the price of a litre of petrol in the past 12 months that is attributable to automatic increases in excise and VAT; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23642/00]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the national average price of a litre of unleaded petrol, as measured by the Central Statistics Office on a nationwide basis, increased from 61.6p in August 1999 to 74.3p in August 2000, the latest month for which official figures are available. Of this 12.7p increase, 2.2p relates to VAT, automatically charged on the VAT exclusive retail price at the rate of 21%, with the balance relating to trade increases.

The last increase in excise duty on unleaded petrol was imposed in the January 1997 budget.
