Vol. 525 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

Tom Enright

Ceist:

82 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there are very little trout in the Brosna River (details supplied). [23793/00]

The Brosna River is within the fisheries region of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board which has statutory responsibility for the management and development of fisheries in its region.

The Shannon Board informs me that the water quality of the river is unsatisfactory and that this has led to a decline in the stocks of wild trout. The Shannon Board is one of the project partners involved in overseeing the development of the Lough Derg and Lough Ree catchment management and monitoring system, the second interim report of which identifies river stretches in the catchment which are experiencing the effects of pollution including the Brosna River.
The board informs me that in addition to its work in combating pollution it has prepared a comprehensive plan for fisheries development works in the river which it intends to put forward for funding under the tourism and recreational angling measure of the National Development Plan 2000 to 2006.
